TURIN — The South Lewis FFA traveled to Cincinnatus High School to compete in the district level LDE contests.
LDE, also known as leadership development events, are used to challenge students to develop critical thinking skills, effective decision making skills, and promote communication skills while fostering teamwork and promoting individual success.
As a chapter, we value our ability to perform in these contests at the local, state and national levels.
Over 12,000 FFA members in 200 chapters from across New York state participated in the district level LDE contests. Only six individual students from each contest earn the opportunity to compete in the Leadership Development Events at the state convention, which will take place in Buffalo during the first weekend in May. It is with much pride to announce that three of our own, South Lewis FFA members will be representing us at the state convention. The following members will be moving on: Evelyn Farese, first place in Senior Creed Speaking; Callie Brown, second place in Junior Creed Speaking and Liadan McAleese, second place in Employment Skills. All of these contests will contribute to each of these contestants’ future skills.
The creed speaking leadership development event aims to develop the public speaking abilities of FFA members, develop their self confidence, and contribute to their advancement in the FFA degree program. In this event, contestants are required to recite the entire FFA creed from their memory, after completion of this, judges will ask contestants questions specific to the FFA creed, which contestants are then required to answer to the best of their ability.
The employment skills leadership development event requires contestants to submit a cover letter and resume; complete an application and participate in a face–to–face interview. This contest stimulates real-world activities used by employers and tests contestants’ ability to perform throughout the employment process.
Both of these leadership development events can contribute to our students’ future success and understanding of the world.
FFA gives students the opportunity to apply practical classroom knowledge to real-world experiences through local, state and national competitions.
